Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso:

The Epitome of Italian Grand Touring Elegance

The Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso, produced between 1962 and 1964, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and refined Ferraris ever built. Positioned as the final evolution of the legendary 250 series, the Lusso—which means “luxury” in Italian—combined the high-performance engineering of Ferrari’s race-bred lineage with a new level of road-going elegance and comfort. Only 350 examples were made, making it a rare and highly collectible classic today.

Styled by Pininfarina and built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, the Lusso features a timelessly graceful design with sleek curves, a long hood, fastback rear, and delicate chrome accents. Its proportions are considered nearly perfect by many automotive historians and collectors. The cabin layout also marked a departure from pure sports car minimalism, offering a more luxurious interior with leather-trimmed seats, wood-rimmed steering wheel, and an elegantly designed dash, complete with a centrally mounted speedometer and tachometer—an unusual but sophisticated touch.

Beneath its sculpted aluminum and steel bodywork lies the same legendary 3.0-liter Colombo V12 engine found in Ferrari’s competition cars of the era. Producing around 240 horsepower, the 250 GT Lusso was capable of reaching speeds of over 150 mph (240 km/h)—an impressive feat for a grand tourer in the early 1960s. The engine’s power delivery was smooth and refined, paired with a precise 4-speed manual gearbox and a well-balanced front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that provided an engaging driving experience both on highways and winding country roads.

Though the Lusso was not built for racing, it benefitted from Ferrari’s motorsport heritage in its chassis and suspension tuning, giving it superior handling dynamics for a luxury GT. The car was favored by elite clientele seeking both performance and style, including celebrities like Steve McQueen, who famously owned one.

Today, the Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso stands as one of the most coveted classic Ferraris among collectors and enthusiasts alike. Its combination of rarity, beauty, and connection to the golden era of Ferrari design makes it a centerpiece in many private collections and classic car concours events worldwide. The Lusso represents the perfect fusion of Italian artistry, engineering excellence, and grand touring spirit.

Whether admired for its sculptural aesthetics, V12 performance, or historical significance, the 1962–1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso continues to define what a true GT car should be—fast, elegant, and unforgettable.
