The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 Coupé Speciale (1969) is a one-off concept car designed by Pininfarina, based on the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 race car chassis. It was unveiled at the 1969 Paris Motor Show as an experimental design study, showcasing Pininfarina’s futuristic vision of aerodynamics and styling.

Origins & Development

The Tipo 33 series was Alfa Romeo’s ambitious sports prototype racing program, introduced in the late 1960s. The Tipo 33/2, powered by a 2.0L V8 engine, achieved success in endurance racing, including the 1968 24 Hours of Daytona, where it won in its class.

Recognizing the potential of the Tipo 33 chassis, Alfa Romeo collaborated with Pininfarina to create a road-going concept that blended racing technology with advanced styling. This resulted in the Tipo 33/2 Coupé Speciale, a car heavily inspired by aerospace and organic design trends of the late 1960s.

Design & Features

The Tipo 33/2 Coupé Speciale is a masterpiece of Italian coachbuilding, featuring:

• Sleek, low-slung bodywork with a teardrop profile for optimal aerodynamics.

• A mid-engine layout, maintaining the racing-derived mechanicals.

• Large wraparound windshield and curved side windows, offering a futuristic, bubble-like cockpit.

• Butterfly doors, adding a dramatic and innovative touch.

• Pop-up headlights, integrated seamlessly into the flowing bodywork.

• A rear window split into three sections, enhancing rear visibility while maintaining the aerodynamic flow.

The design bore similarities to the Ferrari 512S Berlinetta Speciale, another Pininfarina concept from the same era, as both shared Leonardo Fioravanti’s visionary styling approach.

Performance & Technical Specs

• Engine: 2.0L V8

• Power Output: Around 230 hp

• Transmission: 6-speed manual

• Chassis: Lightweight aluminum and magnesium construction, derived from the racing Tipo 33/2

• Weight: Approximately 700 kg (1,540 lbs)

• Top Speed: Estimated at 250 km/h (155 mph)

Legacy & Influence

Though the Tipo 33/2 Coupé Speciale never reached production, it remains one of the most iconic Alfa Romeo concept cars. Its fluid lines, compact proportions, and advanced aerodynamics influenced future Alfa Romeo and Ferrari designs. The car is now a highly prized collector’s item, often displayed at concours events and museum exhibitions.

This concept was part of a broader movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, where Italian design houses like Pininfarina, Bertone, and Italdesign experimented with radical forms that would define the next era of supercars.
