1970 BMW 2800CS

The 1970 BMW 2800CS is a classic grand tourer that belongs to BMW’s legendary E9 coupe series, produced between 1968 and 1975. It was one of the first models to establish BMW’s reputation for building luxurious yet sporty coupes.

Design & Features

  1. The 2800CS featured an elegant, pillarless coupe design, created by Wilhelm Hofmeister, with BMW’s signature kidney grille and slim, chrome-accented bumpers.
  2. Its long hood and short rear deck gave it a balanced, performance-oriented stance.
  3. The interior was designed with a blend of luxury and sportiness, featuring wood trim, high-quality upholstery, and a driver-focused dashboard.

Engine & Performance

  1. Engine: 2.8L M30 inline-6
  2. Horsepower: 170 hp @ 6000 rpm
  3. Torque: 173 lb-ft @ 3700 rpm
  4. Transmission: 4-speed manual (3-speed automatic optional)
  5. 0-60 mph: Around 8.5 seconds
  6. Top Speed: Approximately 124 mph (200 km/h)

The M30 engine was smooth and responsive, making the 2800CS a pleasure to drive, while four-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes up front gave it a balanced ride and handling.

Significance

  1. The 2800CS set the stage for future BMW coupes, leading to the legendary 3.0CS and 3.0CSL “Batmobile” models.
  2. It was a direct competitor to cars like the Mercedes-Benz W111 Coupe and Jaguar E-Type 2+2.
  3. Only 6,064 units were built, making it relatively rare today.

The 1970 BMW 2800CS remains a sought-after collector’s car due to its blend of style, performance, and historical significance in BMW’s coupe lineage.
